Will Biniam Girmay defend his Tour de France green jersey?
Eritrean reigning champion is winless in 2025, but a challenging parcours may play in his favour
The 2024 Tour de France couldn’t have gone much better for Biniam Girmay and Intermarché-Wanty. Three stage wins and the green jersey was far more than could have been expected for the Eritrean on a team that punched above its weight among the big spenders of the WorldTour.
Girmay made history as the first African rider to win a Tour de France classification overall and the first African from outside of South Africa to win a stage. He will be the only African rider to take to the start-line when the 2025 race gets underway in Lille.
Twelve months on, Girmay is heading back to the Tour de France with his mind on retaining his grip on green. However, things are different this year. Instead of going into the biggest race in the world with wins in his pocket this season, Girmay is yet to take a victory in 2025. In fact, he hasn’t won since stage 12 of the Tour de France last year.
